  • What is Premium Economy?

Some airlines provide Premium Economy, a separate class of seating and service from standard Economy. Premium Economy is mostly found on international flights and, when compared to standard Economy, provides about 5-7 inches more legroom as well as additional amenities such as:

    • + 5-7” (13-18 cm) of extra legroom
    • + 1-2” (3-5 cm) of extra seat width
    • + 2-3” (5-8 cm) of extra seat recline
    • Adjustable headrests & leg rest
    • Larger TV screen
    • Premium Food
  • How much does Premium Economy cost?

While there are numerous factors that influence airline ticket prices, we priced several trips on each of the airlines that offer Premium Economy service to give you some ballpark figures.

In comparison to booking standard Economy for transatlantic flights (from the United Kingdom to the United States of America):

    • When you book well in advance, Premium Economy is usually only 30% to 50% more expensive than standard Economy.
    • Premium Economy is typically 85 percent more expensive than standard Economy when booked closer to departure. However, some airlines may offer last minute upgrade supplements for as little as 10% more.

In comparison to booking Economy for transpacific flights (from the United States to Asia/Australasia):

    • Premium Economy fares across the Pacific Ocean are generally 95 percent more expensive than standard Economy fares; they vary less with purchase time.
  • Is Premium Economy good value?

When the additional cost is 15-25% higher than standard Economy, we believe this is good value for the comfort-conscious flier. Keep an eye out for day-of-travel upgrade opportunities as well. If an airline's premium seats aren't fully booked ahead of time, they may offer a discounted upgrade at check-in.

  • How does Premium Economy compare to Business Class?

A Premium Economy ticket is typically 70% less expensive than a Business Class ticket. These two classes are completely different in terms of space and amenities, with Business Class providing up to 50% more legroom, significantly greater recline e.g., flat beds, more substantial leg rests and headrests, and superior food and wine offerings.
